Do you know that the window of opportunity for socializing your puppy comes to a close at 12 weeks?
Socializing your puppy is introducing them to lots of people and healthy dogs and other puppies their own age. Its also introducing them to novel stimuli. Things that may frighten them later in life if they don’t have exposure to it. Things like certain noises and smells and things that they may not encounter every day or things that they may not encounter unless you make an extra effort to introduce them.
Why is it that your vet and maybe your breeder tell you not to take your puppy anywhere until they have all their shots which is sometimes not until they are sixteen weeks of age?
They are looking out for your puppies healthy well being on a physical level and they do not want to see your dog get sick with anything serious that they are not fully protected against such as Parvo.
How can you safely socialize your puppy then?
Take them to a reputable Puppy play group that you know is clean and safe with other vaccinated dogs and puppies. Take them out with you everywhere but do not put them on the ground especially at the beach or grassy areas. Puppy socializing does not guarantee a well socialized adult dog, but it can get you a jump start on the social skills. You would not know if your puppy would have been unsocial if you did go to puppy socials, but you would possibly find out the hard way if they did not. That is not the way you want to find out.
Send Rover offers ‘Free’ Puppy Play. Its that important that you come and get out and properly encourage you to do so by offering it free of charge. This is for puppies 8 to 20 weeks of age with their first round of vaccines. Thanks for Sending Rover On Over!
